He was born the son of a goldsmith and made watches for the daughter of a woodworker in Barcelona. After completing elementary school he went to the Art Acadamy La Escula de la Lonja. He organized his first showing in 1918 in Barcelona, and in 1920 at an exhibition in Paris he met Pablo Picasso. He created about 11 000 works of art.

In the beginning, Miro's works were under the influence of cubism, and later irrational forms and abstract compositions dominated.

He rebutted the steriotypical and accepted styles of painting at the time thinking of them as symbols of burocratic society. His works radiate warmth, colour and a child's view on the world in which one can feel a strong sense of personal and national identity...

He died on Christmas, 1983 in Palma de Mallorca. He is burried in a family plot in Barcelona.
