Bologna - Bononia - Bulaggna

Bulaggna (how it is pronounced in the dialect of the city) is one of the most lively and culturally intense places in Italy. I fell in love with this city and during my university-years, I started to consider it as my home.

I want to share with you some of its  secrets or not so well-known things about its history.
As a friend of mine told me once, there is just one cathedral for each city. Cathedral means the cathedra of bishop, in other words the main church of a diocese. At the beginning, it was declared that this kind of church would have been established only in the principal city, not in villages or small towns. This place would have dedicated to the major celebrations and two of the sacraments as confirmation and ordination.
Every person who visits Bologna would say that the cathedral is San Petronio basilica, located in the biggest square of the city, Maggiore square.

Despite what it looks like, the cathedral is San Pietro church, just a short distance away from San Petronio, in Indipendenza avenue.

The works started on the fourth century A.D. and its style was Romanesque, later on converted to Gothic. Its current look came from 1575, when Domenico Tibaldi, an architect and painter, started the restoration of the crypt and the building of presbytery. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, a Baroque renovation affected the façade and the interior, except for two red marble lions from the Romanesque period, those remained as founatins.

Alfonso Lombardi was one of the artists who took part in the adorning of the interior of the church. In the first chapel on the right side of the cathedral, there is his Lamentatio (Lamentation of Christ) made of eight terra-cotta sculptures.

Walking outdoor beside the cathedral, you may notice the seventy meter campanile (bell tower), that incorporates the more ancient one.
The fake cathedral is one of the seven secrets that are known in the city. Stay tuned to hear more about it.
