Our intern Tereza's first impressions of Zagreb and Croatia

Our intern from the Czech Republic, Tereza, shares her first impressions of life in Croatia.

Zagreb? No, it must be Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. That was my first impression of the capital of Croatia. As time passed, I explored the city more and more. I met new people every day, I saw historical buildings and beautiful parks, tasted local food and drinks, and started to feel the real atmosphere of the city. It wasn't “grey Brno” anymore, it became a city with many colours.
I think that people here are really kind and helpful. Even people who don't understand English try to understand me in “Czech-Croatian language”. For me they seem to be happier than the Czech people, because I haven't seen many grumpy faces here. Everybody is smiling and enjoying his or her life as it is. On the other hand, they are sometimes more relaxed than what is “normal” to me. Imagine standing in a queue for an hour and seeing that out of five desks only one is actually working. I like it when things are well organised and this is why it is sometimes a bit difficult for me to adapt to the local, relaxed atmosphere.
From the very beginning, the teachers at our school have been very nice: everybody talks with us and helps us if needed – I feel like I'm a part of everyday life at our school. A few things at the school surprised me: mainly working in shifts, the system of grades given to pupils (in the Czech Republic 1 is the best mark and 5 the worst), and the number of grades (we have nine grades instead of eight). It is really interesting to see how everything works (and sometimes doesn't work) in a foreign country.
All in all, after the first week full of uncertain feelings, now I am happy to be here.
