Tuesday the 13th

This day is considered a day of bad luck in the Greek culture. Why? Our intern from Greece, Antonios Boumpas, explains.

This day is considered a day of bad luck in the Greek culture firstly, because Constantinople was defeated and fell on Tuesday  May 24, 1453. When the Ottomans conquered the city, the sum of that tragic date was 1+4+5+3=13.
The second reason is that the Crusaders conquered Constantinople  on  Tuesday the 13th, 1204.  This is why it has had a lot of bad luck with invaders.

The number 13 is said to be cursed because it spoils the perfection of the number 12: the 12 gods of Olympus, 12 months of the year, 12 hours of the day and 12 of the night, 12 labours of Hercules, and the12 signs of the zodiac. It is said that King Philip II of Macedon died shortly after he put a 13th statue next to those of the 12 Olympian gods.
The number 13 is also cursed number in Christianity. There were 13 people at the Last Supper: Jesus and his 12 disciples. One of them was Judas, who betrayed him. The 13th chapter of Revelation talks about the Antichrist and the beast, the creation of the Devil. In the tarot cards, the death card has the number 13 on it.
The Greeks also dislike Tuesday because, in Greek, Tuesday is Triti (Third). And since bad luck incidents come in threes, there’s not much to like about Tuesdays. Furthermore, according to astrology, Tuesdays are dominated by Mars, the belligerent god of war.

So we can sum up and say that the Greek's based their fear of that date on the fears in Islam, some religious facts based in Christianity and Dodekatheism,  signs from tarot cards, astrology, and fear of the number 3. Culture is a wonderful thing but education is even better! Don't you agree?
