Riga – home to the first decorated Christmas tree
Who doesn`t love Christmas? Everybody has their own reason to love this holiday – for some this reason is presents, for others it is being with family and loved ones, but for some it may be decorating the most amazing Christmas tree. Who started this tradition which has now become such a huge part of the Holiday?
Our intern from this city, Lina Birže, presents it.
Some sources say that the first decorated Christmas tree was in the beautiful city of Riga. The Brotherhood of Blackheads decorated the first Christmas tree in 1510 in the Town Hall Square in the heart of Riga. The tree was decorated with paper decorations, ribbons, dried flowers and even fruit. In the 16. century this tradition spread to other lands where Christmas was celebrated. Today there is still a small argument between Latvia and Estonia because Estonians believe that they had the first decorated tree although there isn`t enough historical evidence to prove the fact.
