Skyping With a School in the USA

We have already Skyped twice from our school library, with a teacher and his students in America (the United States of America). We got to know each other and asked many questions about each other's personal lives. Some of us even sang!

We are exchanging information with Goochland Middle School which is located in a town of the same name in the state of Virginia, USA. The first time we Skyped, we simply talked about our lives. The second time, we presented the towns in which we live to each other. Other topics were: to get to know the countries in which we live and to discuss global topics such as attitudes towards the environment and globalisation.  Our foreign exchange students from Mexcio, Greece and Bulgaria participated both times which delighted our correspondent in the USA. This gave them a chance to practice the Spanish language which they learned at school, the Bulgarian nodding of the head and the Greek ''Nα'' which means ''Yes''! We had a great time asking and answering questions, and we had a lot of fun in general with the whole Skype experience.

The thing I liked the most was that we had to speak English in order to understand each other. I didn't like the way they tricked us though. Instead of showing us a real spider, they showed us a picture of one on a piece of paper!

I liked the fact that we got to participate in the conversation and that some people even started singing. When we asked them to bring us a real spider, I didn't like that they brought us a drawing of one on paper.

I really enjoyed having the chance and being able to speak to Americans. I even sang a song in Spanish. I was really glad that all my best friends were there.

I gained a new respect for our Croatian language.  Mr. Glenn Hecker began by apologising for the fact that both he and his students could not speak any language other than English so that all communications would have to be in it. He then showed us a big piece of paper with a message written on it in Croatian which they somehow translated.  I was also impressed by their dress-code. Mr. Hecker always wore an ordinary multi-coloured shirt with a tie, which gave me the impression of a relaxed atmosphere together with the professional seriousness of the educational institutions. The Americans took our Skyping very seriously and made thorough preparations each time. They sent us a dozen video clips (walking around school and other similar thinigs) which they had made for us! Mr. Hecker says that they are very excited to be able to communicate with us. I agree because our students come back to school from home just so we can gather together in the afternoon and Skype.

We are very interested.

...and excited.

We get questions in Croatian.

The conversation was interesting to our interns, too.
