At School A Hundred Years Ago

Four grade seven students along with their parents and teachers, found out what classes were like in school a hundred years ago. They visited the Croatian School Museum and the Croatian National Theatre where they saw the original Baška tablet.

The Croatian School Museum has a constant exhibit of a classroom as it would have been at the beginning of the 20th century.  Visitors can put on the old school uniforms and sit on the school benches. Students were not allowed to turn around and they had to sit up straight. Students get a quill, ink and paper and practice old style handwriting or calligraphy. ''Thin lines up, and thick lines down'' is one of the many rules for this decorative type of cursive writing. There is a cross on the wall and a picture ''the Emperor and King almighty''. On the teacher's desk there is a swich. The school rules are written on the chalkboard, and on the floor infront of the board there are corn seeds strewn about. The rules are mainly about classroom behaviour but also behaviour outside of the school. After this walk down history, we had a stroll through the city.

Here are some thoughts about the day:

I liked when we were learning to write calligraphy the best. It was also very interesting in the music library. I liked the maths instruments in the museum. We learned things related to phisics and chemistry. We heard about the punishments for bad behaviour. I was surprised by the fact that you could be punished for things you did wrong outside of school. I would like that the black book (for bad behaviour) and the gold book (for good behaviour) existed today. The Croatian National Theatre was so beautiful, it's too bad that we couldn't see more of it. Davor and Daniel were playing with some cards the whole time. I also had no idea that the Baška tablet was that huge.
