When Condors Fly Above the Mountains...

The grade six classes were very fortunate to have Mr. Wilfredo Villca Vincenti as our guest today. He plays traditional First nation's Indian music from Bolivia. His presentation not only let our students complete their picture of Latin America, which was the topic of study in Geography,  but they also got a chance to see wind and precussion intruments in use. It was a geat way of combining Music with Geography.

Wilfredo Villca Vincenti had visited Croatia ten years ago. He and his four brothers have toured the world playing Latin-American Indian music. Today he visited our school and we got a taste of authentic Bolivian culture: music, dance, traditional costumes, stories and pictures. Mr. Villca is a member of the Aymara people. Although he speaks Croatian well, he spoke to us in Spanish which was translated by our English teacher Noemi Ajduković.  Mrs. Ajduković is not only an English teacher, but she is also a teacher of Spanish and Portugueese. When children can see the value of languages for themselves, then learning a second language becomes more popular.
Above the imence forests and medows of the Andes, the Condors fly freely. This is just one of Bolivia's symbols. Another symbol is the lama which is endangered due to its fur. Mr. Villce's grandfather was a doctor who often traveled very far to reach his pacients. In his time, the Aymara sang songs different from the ones today. We learned one of these, “El condor pasa“. However, even this song has been changed by the influence of the West with today's modern instuments. The traditional feathery costume got the attention of our students while the old instruments left a deep impression.
He taught us a few words in Quechua (a language from the modern Inkas) and in Aymara. In this way we were able to hear all three official Bolivian languages.  After the presentation, he opened small ethnographic exhibit about Latin America which we had set up before hand in one of the classroom.
In this way the music, items, traditions, languages and natural objects of this faraway land had become close at hand.
When we see Condors flying above the mountains, then we understand the feeling of freedom!
