Friendship Between Magogo and Sopnica

Mrs. Maja Sansović, a volonteer in Tanzania, was once again our guest at Sesvetska Sopnica School. The grade six classes, who had learned about Africa, got to know how children their age (from the Masai tribe) live and go to school in Magogo, the small village in Tanzania.

The humanitarian group ''Looking with the Heart'' which was founded by the Catholic missions in Tanzania, was successful in building a public school in the town of Magogo and in funding its operation. The people there think that Africans should learn how to fish, and they don't think they should be spending money on schools. Our children in Croatia don't realize what Tanzanian children must go through just to go to school. They don't work like at home, get warm meals and learn skills which will help them to overcome poverty.

Tanzanian children can get eaten by a lion or a hippo! Poisionous snakes often get into their houses (but luckly they hardly ever bite anyone), and children suffer from malaria because they haven't got one dollar for medicine. Many of them also haven't got two dollars for shoes. Yet they are remarkably happy, smiling and are very creative in making their own toys. When ever they see a white man, they ask him for candy. In school, the children are very quiet and respectful. If children are restless, they get hit on the palms with a swich. They learn Swahili, English, Maths, Geography and other subjects.

The grade six classes have learned about the problems in Africa in school, but now they have seen first hand what life is like. They had many questions and they got many answers.  They learned a few words in Swahili and were able to say  something to their friends in Magogo.

Our guest, Mrs. Maja Sansović, will take our messages to them. We can hardly wait for a reply!
