What is a Student Co-op or Student Entrepreneurship in Croatia?

A Student Co-op or Cooperative,  is a voluntary student organization also refered to as Student Entrepreneurship. It is a member of Student  Co-ops of  Croatia and  the Croatian  Entrepreneural Group for Technical Education.
The students involved in the co-op are under the guidance of teacher mentors. Here they are given the opportunity to develop their interests and deepen their skills in the areas of Technical Education, Economics, Sociology, Biology and other areas which are tied to the manufacturing process from planning  to the marketplace.
The co-op experience allows students to develop keen work habits, acquire understanding, and develop an awareness of nature, heritage and traditional craftsmanship. The students become informed and focused. This basis is required in order to transfer knowledge into the local area and our everyday lives.
(Co-ops or „zadruge“ in Croatia are commonly found in elementary as well as secondary schools, trade schools and colleges.)
Goal
•    to interest and engage a large number of students on a voluntary basis
•    to guide the students in attaining their individual and personal goals
•    to develop and nurture good work habits, interests and skills
•    to develop knowledge and a responsibility to protect and care for the environment
•    to use and to deepen biological, technical, social, and economical knowledge from various areas important for the development of good business practices from the production process to planning and eventually the marketplace
•    to create a climate for the application of these skills and knowledge in life and in  the local area
Aim
•    to develop and nurture good work habits, interests, skills, responsibility, innovation, independence, entrepreneurship and cooperation
•    to aid in the acquirement, deepening, and use of knowledge in the development of management and organization of work
•    to transfer theoretical knowledge from the classroom into practical use
•    to develop  a love of nature, to value what someone has made with their own hands, to realize the importance of balance in nature, to protect the environment and cultural heritage
•    to allow for the development of personal interests, to realize one's own potential and personal goals
•    to acquire the skill and knowledge of using tools and machines in the creation of an item
•    to acquire the habit of organizing one's work station, and the importance of safety at the workplace
•    to prepare for competitions

General Information About Our Co-op Program:
The student co-op program "IZVOR“ is an umbrella organization for a variety of extra-curricular activities and part of the regular school program as well.
The areas of extra-curricular activities which are included in the student co-op program „IZVOR“ are:
1.    The protection of the environment and care of one's cultural heritage,
2.    the manufacturing of ecologically friendly, useful and ornamental items,
3.    the maintenance of the school's web page,
4.    the beautification of the school area.

This year our co-op program "IZVOR“ will take part in a variety of public events such as:
1.    Thank you for our Day of Bread (Thanksgiving) in our school
2.    The Advent Wreath Sale
3.    The Christmas Crafts Sale
4.    Our School Day Celebration and Fund Raising Sale
5.    The Student Co-op Festival in the City of Zagreb
6.    Municipal Competitions

Member Groups:

1.    YOUNG TECHNICIANS – Tibor Bali (Technical Education Teacher)

This group is comprised of the grade five to eight students. They build things according to their choice and interests. This group encompasses the areas of: building, machines, electronics and traffic safety. The students  also participate in competitions, public displays and sales. All items are available for sale at the Advent Wreath Sale, the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser Sale.

2.  TRAFFIC SAFETY GROUP - Gordana Ivšinović (Primary Teacher)

This group is divided into two sub-groups:

a)    The Traffic Safety Patrol – grades six, seven and eight
b)    Traffic Safety – grades four and five

The aim of this group is for  the students to learn about traffic signs and laws. They learn about traffic safety and help the young as well as the old in traffic.

The traffic safety group was very successful in the past. We had placed first in Traffic Safety for the City of Zagreb, and  first place for the country of Croatia! We also placed well in the European Competition in Paris, in Poland and in the Netherlands.

3.     SEWING WORKSHOP FOR YOUNGSTERS – Dubravka Bakran (Primary Teacher)

This year the Sewing Workshop for Youngsters encompasses sewing and needlepoint. Pupils will create decorative and useful items for the home, participate in a variety of Craft Shows and Craft Sales both within our school and outside of it.  
 The children will learn new skills and practice old ones through teamwork co-operation. Through friendship, responsibility and perserverance we strive to keep our local area and culture alive.

4.    PRIMARY ART WORKSHOP– Magdalena Tomljenović (Primary Teacher)

In this group the primary pupils expand their individuality and creativity  through drawing, painting and molding various items creating original works of art. They make decorative Christmas cards and other items which are then available for sale at the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

5.    ELEMENTARY ART GROUP – Gabrijela Dominović (Art Teacher)

The grade five to eight students participate in this art group. They help to decorate the school for various events and holidays. And they too have an opportunity to expand their creativity and individuality through drawing, painting and molding various items creating original works of art. All items are available for sale at the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

6.    PRIMARY ART GROUP – Vesna Plivelić (Primary Teacher)

These primary pupils develop their imagination and creativity through the production of decorative items. These items are made from a variety of materials and are available for sale at the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

7.     ECO GROUP - Anita Kalogjera (Primary Teacher)

This primary level group is concerned with ecological themes and the celebration of special eco-dates: Earth Day, Water Day and Protect the Environment Day as well as  others. We also take care of the environment, plant flowers and maintain the area in front of our school.This year we will concentrate on recycling.
8. ECO-ETHNO GROUP– Ksenija Šćurić (Primary Teacher)
This group tries to find out how people lived in the past. They research traditions connected to the holidays, collect old recipes, take care of the environment and beautify our school. They create a variety of useful and decorative items for the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

9. BUSY HANDS– Jasminka Golubić i Marijani Ištvanić (Primary Teachers)
The grade one and two pupils in the extended school program develop their imagination and creativity by creating a variety of items for the home. They create a variety of useful and decorative items which are available for sale at  the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

10. CREATIVE ARTIST  – Melinda Tupek  (Primary English Teacher)

The grade five to eight students develop their creativity, individuality  and imagination in  creating decorative  and practical items. They paint on glass, wood and metal decorating household items and create jewelry. They make Advent wreaths and cornhusk angels. They have also make picture books and games.  These items are available for sale at the Advent Wreath Sale, the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.

11.  WEB PAGE GROUP – Bojana Trivanović (Computer Technology Teacher)
This group encompasses our computer technology students and teacher.They take photographs, conduct interviews and collect information which they then publish on the school's web page. They are also responsible for the layout of the web page, and for keeping it up to date. In the past we have published a Year Book honouring the 25th anniversary of our school, and a Year Book celebrating the 5th anniversary of our newly opened school building. Likewise, we have also published a Year Book for the grade four and grade eight students.

12.  SCIENCE GROUP – Marina Petrin Horvatić (Biology Teacher)
The grade five to eight students participate in this science group. They explore and investigate various topics of interest. They then create projects and presentations and present their findings to the school and to the public at various events.

13.  ORIGAMI GROUP – Željka Šprljan Piskać (German and Computer Technology Teacher)
The grade five to eight students participate in this group. They expand their individuality and creativity  through molding paper. They make decorative ornaments which are then available for sale at the Christmas Crafts Sale and the School Day Fund Raiser.
