Galicia and Town of Santiago de Compostela

In our numismatic collection in the geography/history classroom you can see the Spanish euro coin with a picture of a church on it. This is the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. We also have a shell, emblem of St James, worn by pilgrims, in our ethnographic collection. For centuries, Santiago de Compostela has been the destination of thousands of pilgrims who walk there by foot in order to visit the Cathedral and to pray there. Our intern from Spain, Julia Moreno Bodelón writes about her town and region Galicia.

Galicia
Galicia is a region of Spain that is located in the northwest part of the country, just above Portugal. Galicia is divided into four different provinces called Pontevedra, A Coruña, Ourense and Lugo. Three of these regions are on the coast. In Galicia we have our own language called Gallego: this Romance language is a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish.
Galicia is well-known for the sea food such as fish, shrimp, calamari and octopus. Actually, many people in Galicia work as fishermen.
Galicia is a region of beautiful landscapes. Because of the rainy weather, we have got many  forests and mountains where people go to relax or hike. Galicia has amazing natural beaches that have not yet been touched by us humans. Moreover, Galicia is one of the cheapest regions of Spain, so if you plan visiting Spain do not hesitate to stop at this amazing and unforgettable place called Galicia!

University and town of Santiago de Compostela
I live in a town called Nigrán, and the closest city to this town is called Vigo. Vigo is a great city because it is on the coast. However, the weather is not really good since it rains very often. Nigrán is a beautiful town located on the coast of the Atlantic ocean. The population is around 15 000, and most people are old. In Spain it is quite common to live in another city when studying for a Bachelor's degree. This is why I study at the university of Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela is a really small and nice city, and it is the capital of Galicia region, located in the northwest of Spain. Santiago is well-known because of the old city which has been a part of UNESCO's  World Heritage Site since 1985. The city stands out as an important center of Christian pilgrimage. Its Cathedral is very important because it is dedicated to St. James the Greater. Another important thing is the 500-year-old university where about 30 000 students are enrolled. The university gives the city a student-friendly atmosphere.

A euro coin in our numismatic collection shows the cathedral.

A present from our intern Javier Gonzales Moreno: The scallop shell is the traditional emblem of James, son of Zebedee, and is popular with pilgrims on the Way of St James to the apostle's shrine at Santiago de Compostela.
